CCTV footage enhancement

What security camera enhancement can show, and what it cannot

Forensic video enhancement works only with pixels the recorder already stored. That holds for enlargement too. Guidance on resizing imagery from the Scientific Working Group on Digital Evidence (SWGDE) puts it this way: "the enlargement process does not introduce new detail absent from the original recording."

Every job starts from the moment your question turns on, such as two cars at a junction or a hand at a counter. Each technique serves that moment:

  • Exposure and contrast, for figures hard to see in low light or glare
  • Stabilization, when camera shake hides which way someone moved
  • Frame selection, to find the moment a detail is clearest
  • Careful enlargement of a small area that holds recorded detail
  • Slowed playback, when the order of events is in dispute
  • Isolating a region, so one entrance, lane or counter can be watched alone
  • Sharpening for soft edges, held to what the pixels support

Some detail was never captured at all

Compression discards detail the moment a recorder saves a file. Low resolution, distance, motion blur, low light, glare and interlacing (the comb pattern older cameras leave on moving objects) each take more. No process puts that detail back, including ours. A face or plate at the edge of a wide view may cover only a handful of pixels.

Some outcomes are inconclusive. When the frames cannot answer your question, we tell you so plainly.

Enhancement is a separate discipline from authentication, identification and measurement, and we perform none of those. Speed analysis, image comparison, DVR data recovery, audio enhancement and deepfake detection are outside our work as well.

One in-house team does every enhancement

Our in-house team does the enhancement work for every market, so a recording from Chicago gets the same work as one from Santa Fe. AI agents only speed up steps inside the team's editing software. The written notes with each delivery name the software used.

Nothing moves until we understand the footage and the question it has to answer.

  1. Inquiry and intake

You describe the recording, the time range and your question, by form, phone or email. No files are sent yet.

  2. Controlled transfer

We arrange a controlled transfer for the files once your inquiry is in.

  3. Assessment

Our in-house team checks what the recording holds and tells you whether it can answer your question fully, partly or not at all.

  4. Quote and delivery date

You receive a quote and a delivery date before enhancement begins.

  5. Enhancement on copies

Every adjustment is made on a working copy. The original export stays untouched.

  6. Delivery with notes

Clips, stills, the original and the notes arrive together.

Custom pricing per project

Forensic video enhancement cost, deliverables and delivery dates

Each delivery puts every result next to its source. It has four parts:

  • Clarified clips, for viewing the event at normal speed or slowed
  • Stills of the key frames, for reports, claim files and briefs
  • The original recording alongside, so anyone can compare the same moment
  • Written notes listing each processing step and the software used

Pricing follows the work the footage needs

Quotes for the enhancement come after the assessment, because the footage sets the price. Five things decide the scope:

  • How much footage there is, and how wide the time range
  • How many cameras or other sources cover the event
  • Formats that need their own player software
  • The condition of the recording: compression, light and motion
  • How many clips and stills you need

Delivery dates come with every quote

Timing runs on the same drivers as price. Long time ranges, several cameras, proprietary players and heavy compression each add work. A standard turnaround published before anyone has seen the footage would be a guess, so we publish none. Every quote carries a delivery date instead.

How to send video evidence

Native DVR exports and original phone, dashcam or doorbell files

Re-filmed and forwarded copies lose detail. A phone filming a monitor adds glare and screen pattern to a picture already shrunk to fit the display. Text, social media and email services recompress and resize clips, often without saying so.

Sent files reach us only through a controlled transfer we arrange after your inquiry. Email and the form are never used for footage. We keep a documented evidence-handling procedure and share it with counsel on engagement. Before the transfer, gather these:

  • From a DVR or NVR: the native export, plus its player software if the format is proprietary
  • From a phone, dashcam or doorbell camera: the original file, copied straight from the device, card or app account
  • For each file: the camera, the date and the time range that matter
  • Leave the recorder and the original export untouched once the export is made

We ask about the footage before quoting

Eight answers start every assessment: your name and contact details, your role, your market, the type of recording, its approximate length, the time range that matters, the question you need answered and your deadline. Leave the footage out of this first step. To request a footage assessment, call (505) 629-9447 or email info@skolxmedia.com with those answers. We then set up the transfer, and the assessment and quote follow. Nothing on these pages is legal advice.

Forensic video enhancement in New Mexico

Headquartered in Santa Fe, serving Albuquerque, Las Vegas, Nevada and Chicago

Skol X Media is headquartered in Santa Fe, New Mexico, and provides forensic video enhancement for clients in every market. Our in-house team does the work, and footage reaches us by controlled transfer wherever it was recorded.

Two markets also have an in-person option. Clients can book in-person handoffs in Santa Fe, where a drive or phone is handed over at an appointment. Albuquerque is about an hour's drive away, and Albuquerque footage can be handed over by appointment too.

We have no office in Nevada or Illinois. Las Vegas, Nevada recordings and Chicago case footage come to us by remote transfer, as they do from every other market. The assessment, the enhancement and the notes are the same whichever route the files take.

Forensic video enhancement FAQ

Answers on blurry footage, AI enhancement and court use

Can CCTV footage be enhanced?

Yes, within what the recorder captured. Exposure, stabilization, frame selection and careful enlargement all start from the DVR's native export, which holds more detail than a forwarded or re-filmed copy. Before any work is quoted, the assessment shows how much the footage holds. Sometimes that is too little to answer your question, and we say so at that point.

Can blurry security camera footage be made clear?

Clearer, sometimes. Clear, only if the detail was recorded in the first place. Motion blur, poor focus and heavy compression set the ceiling for any method. A tool that turns a smear into a sharp face is inventing that face, and that is the reason we refuse generative AI.

Does AI video enhancement add fake details?

It can. A generative upscaler guesses what a blurred area probably looked like and draws it in. That detail comes from training data, and your camera never recorded it. Generative tools are never used on footage we handle. Our AI agents work only with the existing tools of standard editing software. They are there for speed, and they never generate a pixel.

Will a court accept enhanced footage?

Admissibility is decided by the court under the applicable rules, so we cannot promise acceptance. What we supply is the original alongside each result and written notes naming every step and the software behind it. Your counsel decides how to use them. This page is not legal advice.

How is enhancement different from authentication?

Forensic video enhancement clarifies what a recording shows. Authentication examines whether the recording is original and unaltered, which calls for different methods. It is a separate discipline, and we do not perform it. Identifying people and taking measurements from video fall outside our work for the same reason.

What if my case may need an expert witness?

Testimony and enhancement are different disciplines. If your matter may need an expert witness, raise it on the first call, and you will get a straight answer about what we can and cannot provide.
